While many people instinctively recognize empathy, psychologist Robert Carkhuff took it a step further by developing a structured model to assess and enhance empathic communication.

What Is Carkhuff’s Empathy Scale? Robert Carkhuff’s Empathy Scale is a systematic approach to understanding and measuring empathy in interpersonal interactions. It helps determine the depth and effectiveness of empathy conveyed in a conversation, often used in counseling, coaching, and leadership development. The scale ranges across levels, assessing how well one person listens and responds to another’s feelings and needs.

Carkhuff’s model builds on Carl Rogers’ work in humanistic psychology, refining the concept of empathic listening by introducing a graded scale that evaluates the quality of responses in emotional exchanges.

The Levels of Empathy: Carkhuff’s scale typically has five levels, ranging from ineffective to highly effective empathy:

Level 1 – Nonempathic Response: At this level, a response is detached or dismissive. The listener may completely ignore or misinterpret the speaker’s emotions, leaving them feeling unheard or invalidated.

Level 2 – Limited Empathy: The response shows some recognition of feelings but is superficial or inaccurate. It may convey an attempt at understanding but fails to fully grasp the depth of the speaker’s experience.

Level 3 – Functional Empathy: The listener accurately reflects the emotions expressed, acknowledging the experience without adding further depth or insight. This level is considered minimally effective in counseling and support settings.

Level 4 – Skilled Empathy: The response not only recognizes the emotions but expands on them, helping the speaker clarify their feelings and experiences. This level fosters a deeper connection and emotional validation.

Level 5 – Highly Skilled Empathy: At this level, the listener demonstrates profound understanding and insight into the speaker’s emotions, sometimes recognizing emotions the speaker has not fully articulated. The response helps the speaker gain self-awareness and perspective, strengthening trust and openness in the interaction.
