Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a potentially debilitating condition that develops after a terrifying ordeal involving physical harm, or the threat of it.

If you develop PTSD you may have been the person subjected to the ordeal, or you may have witnessed it happening to one of your family, friends or colleagues. One of the keys to understanding this disorder is to imagine not only the terror of the ordeal, but the helplessness you feel during or after the ordeal.

If you suffer from PTSD you may feel emotionally numb, startle easily, lose interest in things you once enjoyed doing, become irritable or aggressive and have trouble feeling affection. You may also experience flashbacks of the ordeal, either during waking hours or through vivid dreaming.

PTSD used to be referred to as “Shell Shock” or “Battle Fatigue” because of the number of armed forces personnel who experienced it after front line duty. Certain types of medication and counselling can usually treat the symptoms effectively.
